Paper planes is a combination of the three photographic genres i love the most.
Fashion, still life, and fine art. It can be seen as therapy for a creative grey zone, a period of creative blockage wich needs to be solved. Many symbolic values can be attached: the need for creative freedom, the need to return to 'shooting for joy', or simply the wish to fly. Paper planes also reflect the disposability of modern day visual culture, fast fashion industry, and therefore a general human condition. When my father -an artist- died in july 2015, i felt a strong need for creative renewal. A way to re-invent what i was doing, why, and for who. next to being shaken up on personal and emotional level, the loss of someone so close had an impact on my ability to create. I realised that a lot happened on subconcious level and auto-pilot.The movement of folding a page into a plane, almost a reference to childlike playfullness, forces me to be in the moment and reflect on my course as photographer and person.

Ruben Reehorst ( 32) is an award winning portrait, fashion and art photographer born and based in Maastricht. He gratuated at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts & Design. The work of Ruben Reehorst takes you into a world in which people and everyday objects can sometimes take on a peculiar form. The people in the photographs are all attractive, yet in one way or another they do not seem to want to present themselves to you as people of flesh and blood. They are very surreal. They seem to be continuously trying to withdraw from our world. It is this and his love of storytelling, the quest for scope for the imagination and the absurd in combination with a clear visual language – recognised internationally as Dutch – that makes the work of Ruben Reehorst so personal.
