Last year I moved to Miami, to make paintings and collages full time. It’s the most exotic place I have ever lived. As a northerner, it took me a while to adjust to a tropical climate. Miami’s distinctive visual identity is new to me, and I’ve found myself not in the studio but out on expeditions, exploring the surroundings with a camera.
Through my daily walks, this new environment has been the source of incredible inspiration. The colors and quality of light, the architecture and the flora are all seeping into my work. And yet, despite the surface beauty, I have also found some pressing issues at stake in this place.
The working title of my project is Flood/Zone. Miami Beach is slowly but steadily slipping underwater as sea levels continue to rise. 93% of buildings in the city are in the high-risk flood areas, yet construction is booming. My home is between the ocean and a creek in Miami Beach - an artificial island subject to regular inundations. Living here is a bittersweet experience. It feels like paradise, yet the only roots that are secure belong to the mangrove trees.

Samoylova has exhibited internationally, including Aperture Foundation in New York, Griffin Museum of Photography in Boston, and Brussels Photography Festival in Belgium. Her first monograph, Landscape Sublime, was published by the In the In-Between Editions in June 2016.
