Los Barberos de la Cinco ("The Barbers") is a photo essay that explores the life and culture of the barbers of "La Cinco de Mayo" (May 5th Avenue), which is one of Panama's busiest and most chaotic areas. Amidst an accelerated real state expansion and as a result of the growth and touristic development of this part of the city, the barbers of the "West Side Barbershop" have become one of the few peddling stands that have survived. The job of the barber is recognized and looked up to by young men, it is nowadays the number 1 free training course provided by the government and the Ministry of Labor. Young people see a way to success by following the path of their neighborhoods' barbers, it is a figure of power and respect. Being a barber means you've made it. This series explores the concepts of "gentrification" as well as the culture and identity of the Panamanian worker. Is it thought as an entry series to a bigger project that dives into the subcultures and unique qualities of other traditional and popular Panamanian jobs and workers.
