SULCIS IN FUNDO

The "Sulcis-Iglesiente", is one of the poorest provinces in Italy, located south west of Sardinia Island. Once a coal basin, the area has been converted to chemical industry, but today, even the factory gates are closed and 30,000 people out of work. Amongst the youngsters the resignation translates into early school leaving: 36,67% are NEET. In the villages close to the industrial plants there is talk of ascertained biological damage: it is not possible to consume the milk of the sheep that graze in the surrounding area, nor to eat their meat, nor to harvest shellfish, let alone cultivate the land. As if that wasn't enough Sulcis hosts RWM Italia S.p.A. a company that employs around 300 people and produces armaments for members of the military coalition led by Saudi Arabia involved in the conflict in Yemen. Sulcis represents the effects of economic colonialism and the fragility of globalized capitalism in forgotten by the government land.
