The howling mountain

A Sunday in February in the local newspaper, the wolf is on the cover. In Savoy, the growing presence of this protected species is a subject of debate. I choose to follow the wolf’s trail, or rather those who speak about it : farmers, shepherds, hunters, park wardens, mountain guides or hikers share their stories with me. This project talk about men and wolves, predation, little red riding hoods’ stories. It’s a mix of anger, fear, fascination, with myths and legends about this animal. I’m working with photography, audio recording and writing. This project is in progress.

Un dimanche de février dans le journal local, le loup fait la couverture. En Savoie, la présence grandissante de cette espèce protégée fait du bruit et anime les débats. Je décide de suivre la piste du loup, ou plutôt de ceux qui en parlent : éleveurs, bergers, chasseurs, gardiens de la faune, guides de montagne ou randonneurs me partagent leurs histoires. Ce projet parle d’hommes et de loups, de prédation, d’histoires de petits chaperons rouges. S’y mélange la colère, la peur, la fascination, les mythes et croyances sur l’animal. Je travaille avec la photographie, l’enregistrement sonore et l’écriture. Ce projet est en cours de réalisation.

I’m Betty Bogaert, I’m 24 years old and I live between the French Alps where I grew up, and Canada where I studied photography. My photographic practice takes place in a documentary style, focusing on a sincere and human exchange. I like to give the floor to those who, when they open me the door of their world, break the barriers of intimacy. I believe in the expressive potential of the photography, which has become for me a rich day-to-day support to think the world.
