Models of icebergs photographed using medium and large format film cameras.
I contacted a paper designer who kindly made models of icebergs for me. As he is based in New Zealand, the prospect of shipping them to the UK without damaging them seemed highly unlikely. So he sent me files in order that I could make the model myself. As my skills in 3D are somewhat lacking I spoke to a local architects practice who let me work with one their trainee.
The first model was made in paper. The second set of models are made from glass and generally ornamental. The final model was again designed by my colleague in New Zealand. He made a modular set of icebergs and the architectural trainee built this for me using coloured card.
I have been lucky enough to have photographs from this series exhibited in various galleries including Northampton, Cambridge and London, UK, Bilbao, Spain and the US, as well as several online exhibits.
About author:
Luke Harby (b. 1972) is an artist who works solely with photographic film.
His work attempts to explore the nature of photography itself. It engages with the act of photographic production and reproduction; the fact (or fiction) that photography is merely representation; and that all photographic images are illusory.
Given this dogma he enjoys the act of manipulating the subject, using tricks of scale, displacing or adjusting the context, or by vandalising the image in some way in order to rephotograph it.
Recent work has been shown with Editions l'Heliotrope, Hand Magazine, Humble Arts Foundation, Noice Magazine, Streitlab, Float Magazine and Lumen London. In 2018 he completed two residencies. He lives and works in Northampton, UK.
