This portrait series was photographed during the "Bash About 2016" in Berlin, Germany, a gay and inclusive rugby event hosted by the Berlin Bruisers, one of Europe's growing number of gay rugby teams.
The "Bash About" hosted gay teams from across Europe and Canada to participate in a weekend of training, skill sharing, and finally an international tournament.
Over the two days of the event, the temperature in Berlin pushed over 35 degrees centigrade, under a blazing sun, and yet everyone played with so much passion, and so much strength, creating a truly thrilling competition. Despite the uncomfortable heat, tough play, and injuries, there was no animosity, rather there was an all encompassing spirit of brotherhood and genuine compassion.
This photo series aims to show that the term “gay” does not define a person. Gay or not these men are indistinctive from any other rugby players. They are tough, serious about their sport, and play hard.
